Our Story

Across the world, there are many rich culinary cultures: French, Italian, Spanish seafood, Japanese, Thai, and more. Chinese cuisine is one of them — but it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Even as a small food stall, we manage dozens of ingredients and dishes. Yet Chinese food is incredibly simple and affordable.

If we had to choose one symbol for Chinese cooking, it would be the wok. It can make nearly all Chinese dishes and represents home. For example, when moving into a new home, many Chinese families consider it complete only after boiling water in the wok. While running our small eatery, we began organizing practical techniques and matching recipes based on wok use, including control of heat and ladling skills.

We are a humble street food stall from Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China — best known for serving a local specialty called lao guo (烙锅 or Luo guo). Guizhou has many delicious snacks. Aside from the world-famous Moutai liquor, perhaps the most iconic item is its chili sauce. Why Guizhou and not elsewhere? Because it used to be one of China’s poorer provinces, where chili peppers with plain rice were once a staple for many.

Lao guo is our most abundant dish — a feast of flavorful ingredients cooked together in a raised clay pot. Sometimes we even use a Chinese wok, turning the experience into a bit of a show. That’s why we named our project Wok.Show.
