Add pork ribs, water, ginger, garlic, and a small amount of salt to a porcelain bowl, and simmer for 3-4 hours in advance until the meat is tender and falls apart easily. Use the broth to cook the yam, and simmer for 5 minutes after boiling, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness.
