Millet Yam Porridge

Millet Yam Porridge

This soothing Chinese Yam and Millet Porridge is a nourishing, easy-to-make dish that combines the natural sweetness of Chinese yam with the wholesome texture of millet. Perfect for breakfast or a light meal, this recipe starts with a clever trick—soaking hands in diluted vinegar to prevent itchiness while handling the yam. The yam is peeled, diced, and simmered with millet in water, creating a creamy, comforting porridge. Cooking the millet first ensures a tender bite, while the yam adds a delicate, slightly sticky texture. A touch of sugar enhances the natural flavors, making it subtly sweet and satisfying. Rich in fiber and nutrients, this porridge is not only delicious but also gentle on digestion. Plus, the millet rinse water can be repurposed as a natural facial cleanser—adding a bonus beauty hack! Warm, wholesome, and effortlessly prepared, this porridge is a delightful way to enjoy traditional Chinese ingredients in a simple yet flavorful dish.

Instructions

1. Step 1

Step 1
Add a few drops of vinegar to the water, wash the Chinese yam clean, and soak your hands in the diluted vinegar (soaking your hands in the diluted vinegar can prevent itchiness when cutting the yam). Peel and cut the yam into small pieces. Rinse the millet with water (the millet rinse water can be used as a facial cleanser).

2. Step 2

Step 2
Boil 1000ml of water in a pot. Add the millet and cook for 5 minutes (millet is harder to cook than yam, so it should be cooked first).

3. Step 3

Step 3
Add the yam and cook together. Boil over high heat for 5 minutes, then simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Add an appropriate amount of sugar and mix well before serving.
